MaidSafe's SAFE Network Became Autonomi: Decentralized Storage Explained

The project formerly promoted as MaidSafe's SAFE Network is now called Autonomi. Unlike old descriptions that still call it a future test network, Autonomi says its network and ANT token launched in February 2025. It is best evaluated as a young peer-to-peer storage network: verify current client behavior, data durability, costs, and recovery before relying on its permanence claims.

From MaidSafe and SAFE Network to Autonomi

MaidSafe began developing designs for a peer-to-peer data network before the Autonomi name and current protocol. That long history includes materially different architectures and test networks, so old SAFE Network descriptions are not reliable implementation documentation. Use the current client, protocol, token, and migration sources for any operational decision.

How distributed encrypted storage works

Autonomi clients encrypt and content-address data, divide it into chunks, and distribute records across participating nodes according to current protocol rules. A node should not receive the complete plaintext, but confidentiality still depends on client correctness, encryption and key handling, metadata leakage, and the availability of enough independent chunks. Repair behaviour must be measured under churn rather than inferred from the architecture description.

The design belongs to the peer-to-peer storage family rather than to conventional cloud hosting. Supporting a website or application still requires client software, naming, mutable state, key recovery, updates, and an accessible gateway or local runtime. Eliminating one central storage operator does not eliminate these control points or supply a contractual availability guarantee.

ANT payments and the legacy MAID story

Current Autonomi material uses ANT as the network token. Node operators can be rewarded for providing capacity, while writes require payment. Token incentives do not ensure useful geographic diversity or long-term storage by themselves; the protocol must continually measure, reward, and repair availability.

MaidSafeCoin (MAID) was a proxy asset sold during 2014 crowdfunding, before the production network and ANT branding. Old claims about a future Safecoin conversion are historical and should not be used as transfer instructions. Holders must consult Autonomi's current, official migration material and verify contract and network identifiers; impersonation and obsolete exchange listings are material risks.

Autonomi's architecture combines client-side self-encryption, content addressing, distributed chunk storage, and payment incentives. The client still needs wallet and application state, and claims about deduplication or convergent encryption must be assessed for information leakage. It is a peer-to-peer storage protocol with token payments, not a conventional blockchain that stores complete user files in blocks.

Client-side encryption can limit what a storage node learns about content, but “encrypted by default” is not a complete privacy assessment. Traffic timing, content addressing, deduplication, wallet activity, local state, gateways, application logs, and key recovery can reveal information. Test the current implementation and threat model before storing personal, regulated, or deletion-sensitive data.

What to test before trusting the network

The long development history included multiple architectures, test networks, a Rust implementation, and the Autonomi rebrand. Autonomi reports that production deployment completed in February 2025. The question is therefore no longer simply "will it launch?" but whether the live network meets a workload's durability, performance, privacy, and support requirements.

Test uploads with non-sensitive data, retrieve from clean clients and multiple networks, simulate loss of local metadata, measure time-to-first-byte and total cost, and confirm deletion and mutability semantics. Keep conventional backups until independent durability evidence meets the workload's retention objective. Decentralized storage can reduce reliance on one cloud provider, but it also changes support, compliance, erasure, incident response, and service-level guarantees.
