Hetzner vs Google Cloud: Pricing and GKE Compared

By · Updated

Hetzner is a compelling choice for straightforward compute, dedicated servers, storage, and self-managed Kubernetes with predictable operations. Google Cloud is stronger when GKE, managed data systems, analytics, global networking, or Google identity integration are core requirements. Hetzner is not limited to Germany and Finland, and raw instance prices do not capture the cost of replacing managed GCP services.

Compare GKE with self-managed Kubernetes honestly

Google Kubernetes Engine offers Standard and Autopilot operating modes with different responsibility, control, and pricing boundaries. Google's official mode comparison explains what Google manages. On Hetzner, the customer owns Kubernetes control-plane availability, upgrades, certificates, network policy, ingress, storage drivers, backups, and incident response.

A team with a mature Kubernetes platform can value that control. A small product team may save more by avoiding cluster operations, even with a higher provider invoice. Quantify time spent on upgrades, vulnerability response, monitoring, capacity, and recovery. Include the cost of a qualified on-call engineer, not only virtual machines.

Price and benchmark a complete workload

Use current Google Compute Engine pricing and the current Hetzner catalogue for the selected locations. Include CPU architecture and sharing, committed-use terms, boot and data disks, provisioned storage performance, snapshots, load balancers, public addresses, NAT, DNS, logs, monitoring, support, inter-zone traffic, egress, and tax. Managed database backups and failover must appear as explicit work on the self-managed side.

Run a representative load test and a recovery test. Measure throughput, tail latency, CPU contention, storage latency, network limits, provisioning time, and restore time. Avoid fixed “three to ten times cheaper” claims: the ratio changes with workload, discount, egress, managed-service use, and staff cost.

Choose location and jurisdiction separately

Hetzner Cloud lists Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki, Ashburn, Hillsboro, and Singapore in its official location guide. Product availability differs by location, so verify the exact instance, network, load-balancer, volume, snapshot, and backup path. Google Cloud publishes region and service availability separately; neither provider should be assumed to keep every log, support artifact, or backup in the compute location without contractual confirmation.

GDPR and sovereignty require a data-flow map, processing agreement, subprocessor review, transfer mechanism, retention rules, support-access controls, incident process, and encryption-key decision. Provider nationality or a German VM alone does not guarantee the outcome. Choose Hetzner for a portable, well-operated IaaS design; choose GCP when measured value from GKE or managed data and network services outweighs cost and lock-in. Rehearse export and restore either way.
