Qualtrics vs SurveyMonkey: Enterprise vs Self-Serve Survey Platforms

By · Updated

Qualtrics is the stronger fit for complex enterprise research, governance, integrations, and experience management; SurveyMonkey is usually faster for self-service surveys and straightforward team feedback. Qualtrics is no longer owned by SAP: SAP completed the sale of its entire stake to Silver Lake and CPP Investments in June 2023. Pricing and packaging should be requested for the current scope, not copied from an old monthly estimate.

Ownership and product scope are separate questions

SAP announced completion of the Qualtrics sale in its official transaction notice. Existing SAP integrations may still be useful, but the historical “SAP Qualtrics” label should not imply current ownership. Procurement should identify the contracting entity, support chain, subprocessors, and data locations in today's documents.

Qualtrics spans research design, customer and employee experience, workflows, and enterprise analytics. SurveyMonkey ranges from individual surveys to enterprise administration and integrations. Compare only the products and tiers that implement the required workflow; a platform-wide feature list can conceal that a capability is an add-on or separately licensed.

Test research quality, not the number of question types

Build one representative study with branching, quotas, randomization, translations, accessibility, anonymous and identified responses, panel imports, and an analysis export. Ask which logic executes in the browser, how incomplete responses are handled, and whether edits after launch affect longitudinal comparability. Validate weighting and statistical outputs independently for high-stakes research.

Also test distribution limits, duplicate prevention, invitation tracking, offline or mobile collection, API quotas, webhooks, and export fidelity. Qualtrics publishes its developer surface in the official API documentation; SurveyMonkey provides equivalent integration details in its developer API. A required integration that cannot be monitored or replayed is an operational risk.

Make security and cost comparable

Send both vendors the same requirements: identity and SCIM, administrator roles, audit logs, encryption, retention and deletion, regional hosting, subprocessors, breach notice, backups, RTO and RPO, accessibility, support response, and exit export. Review current assurance reports and their scope rather than repeating an undated certification badge.

Price a three-year scenario including author seats, response volume, panels, SMS, advanced analytics, integrations, premium support, implementation, training, and export or termination. Choose SurveyMonkey when a small team can meet its needs without enterprise complexity. Choose Qualtrics when governed multi-program research and integration justify the implementation cost. In either case, pilot with real respondents and verify deletion and export before signing.
